Sedation Dentist in Indianapolis

November 15, 2013

Dental studies show that roughly 30% of people avoid going to the dentist because of fear or anxiety. Fortunately, sedation dentistry has been developed to help patients fight their fears. Dr. Ted Reese, a sedation dentist in Indianapolis, is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and administers sedation intravenously, orally or by gas. He is a licensed dentist providing intravenous sedation for over 25 years. Although sedation dentistry is important in dental treatments when dealing with nervous patients, the Indianapolis Dentistry staff extends more help by creating spa-like facilities and amenities, going out of their way to erase the “clinical impression” most dental clinics have. Coupled with highly qualified and trained yet equally compassionate and kind staff, they make your dental experience calm and relaxing - so you won't mind going back!

All staff provide great care. Everyone was very professional and knowledgeable. They are reassuring and compassionate. Going to the dentist makes me very anxious and nervous. Dr. Reese and all staff were patient and kind." -Chelsea H., Carthage, Indiana

Advantages of Using Sedation Dentistry

  • Working in the same way as general anesthesia in medical surgery, sedation dentistry allows patients to relax, being induced in a sleep-like state.
  • This technology helps a sedation dentist in Indianapolis like Dr. Reese perform longer procedures and multiple treatments on his patients without discomfort. In fact, Dr. Reese often treats several teeth and problems in an extended sedation treatment. Complex procedures can be performed in a single sitting that may otherwise take multiple visits – this benefits both the patient and the dentist.
  • It provides a safe and comfortable dental experience for patients, helping them overcome their fear of dentists.

Sedation Dentistry Methods

GAS SEDATION

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is helpful for patients who are nervous during a dental visit.  The least expensive of all the sedation procedures, this helps soothe and calm patients during treatments. The main attraction of this technique is its immediate reversibility. After the procedure, you can immediately go back to normal activities – drive, go back to the office or school – without experiencing any after or side effects.

ORAL SEDATION

Oral sedation is a popular sedation dentistry method.  Combined with gas sedation (nitrous oxide) and a sedative pill, oral sedation induces a very drowsy sleep state often accompanied by a lack of memory of the procedure.  You can learn more about how the combination works in the FAQs listed here.  This makes a patient’s dental appointment “uneventful” and will encourage him to come back again. This is very effective for patients who need to go back for several procedures to complete a dental treatment.

INTRAVENOUS (IV) SEDATION

Often called the sleep and anxiety-free sedation technique, IV sedation lets you safely sleep through your dental procedure. Dr. Reese inserts a sedative and narcotic drug through an intravenous line to induce a controlled sleep state. Safety is guaranteed as Dr. Reese has performed thousands of procedures under IV sedation. Your vital signs are closely monitored so that additional drug doses can be administered to ensure you sleep safely throughout the procedure.  IV insertion is actually better because reversal agents can be immediately administered for those with critical health issues. Dr. Reese also safely administers additional vitamins to supplement the body’s faster recovery and detoxification. Take the case of amalgam removals. Amalgams contain mercury and need to be removed carefully and safely. Dr. Reese intravenously administers Vitamin C, a very powerful antioxidant, to help combat mercury exposure during the procedure. Since it is administered through IV, its effect is immediate to the body and wouldn't cause gastric burn if high doses will be given. Do not worry about over dosage too – Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and whatever is not absorbed is passed through the urine.

I am always pleased with the tender care I receive. I was nervous and uncomfortable the other day and they gave me just what I needed. Most professional place I have been." -Lan P., Indianapolis
