Ozone Dentistry: How It Works and Why Patients Choose It

If you’ve seen the term "ozone therapy" on a holistic dentist’s website, you might wonder what it actually involves, and whether it’s worth asking for. Ozone might sound like something out of a chemistry class, but in dentistry, it’s used in a surprisingly practical way.

At Indianapolis Dentistry, Dr. Aatif Ansari and Dr. Nicole Quint use ozone therapy as part of our biological approach to oral health. It’s a quiet tool in the background, but one that can make a real difference in healing and prevention.

What is ozone therapy in dentistry?

Ozone is a form of oxygen, just with three atoms instead of the usual two. In small, carefully controlled amounts, that third oxygen molecule makes ozone highly reactive, meaning it can neutralize bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact.

In dental care, ozone is used in three forms:

  • Gas (for disinfecting extraction sites or deep pockets)
  • Ozonated water (for rinsing or irrigation during procedures)
  • Ozonated oils (for ongoing home use after treatment)

It’s not something you feel or taste much during your visit. It just quietly does the work: cleaning, supporting tissue repair, and helping reduce the need for more invasive treatments.

How is ozone used in a dental visit?

Here are a few examples of how we use ozone therapy at our Indianapolis biological dental office:

  • After a tooth extraction or cavitation surgery to disinfect the area and support cleaner healing
  • In periodontal treatments to manage gum disease without aggressive chemicals
  • With dental fillings to clean the cavity site and reduce bacterial risk before sealing
  • Around crowns or implants to help maintain a balanced oral environment

We also sometimes use ozone therapy alongside PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) to support natural healing after surgery or inflammation.

Is ozone safe?

Yes, when used properly. We use ozone in precise, small doses tailored for dental use. It’s not absorbed systemically, and it’s not the same as environmental ozone pollution (a common point of confusion).

At our office, every use of ozone is guided by clinical purpose. We’re not just “adding ozone” because it’s trendy. We’re using it where it makes sense, based on your body’s needs and the type of treatment you’re having.

Why do holistic dentists use ozone so often?

Because it fits the philosophy. Ozone supports the body’s natural healing response, without introducing harsh antiseptics or antibiotics unnecessarily. For patients who are chemically sensitive or looking for more minimally invasive treatment, ozone offers a gentle but effective option.

Some patients specifically seek out ozone dentistry because they’ve read about its benefits, or they’re already seeing a naturopath or functional medicine provider who supports it.

Is ozone therapy right for me?

You don’t need to know everything before asking. We’ll talk through your situation, treatment goals, and whether ozone therapy might help. It’s not a cure-all, but it’s one of many tools we use to treat the whole person, not just the tooth.
