Implants Vs. Dentures: Finding Your Best Tooth Replacement Option

October 22, 2012

Are you feeling self conscious about tooth loss? While we all hope to maintain a healthy and attractive smile throughout our lifetime, sometimes this is just not feasible.

Not only is tooth loss an aesthetical nightmare, but it can also expedite undesired dental and social problems. All your teeth are essential to chewing, speaking, and smiling. When any of your teeth are missing, these seemingly normal activities can be incredibly difficult and overwhelming.

Here are some tooth replacement options to consider in order to get your smile back in tip-top shape:

Implants

Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth! Dr. Reese will “implant” a metal post beneath your gum and fuse it to your jaw bone. Then the replacement tooth will be mounted on the implant.

Indianapolis Dentistry makes implants a breeze with the following services:

  • Same day removal of nonrestorable teeth, with surgical placement of the implant and ‘temporization’ of an acrylic tooth to eliminate gaps in your smile.
  • Same day mini implant placement and denture retention to secure your existing dentures.
  • In-office, intravenous (IV) sedation in our own surgery suites to avoid hospital costs, yet allow you to safely sleep through the surgical procedures.
  • Bone grafting to replace the missing jaw bone required for implant placement after years of tooth loss.
  • Gum grafting to replace the shrunken gum tissue negatively affecting smile results in front tooth replacement.
  • Sinus bone grafting to provide the required jaw bone for implant placement in the upper jaw.
  • Some implants can be placed without the need for incisions or sutures, which reduces any post surgical swelling or tenderness!

If you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for implants, contact our office for a second opinion. We’ve been able to help many patients, that were previously told they couldn’t be helped. We’d also be happy to offer you a second opinion and treatment plan to assist you in your decision making.

Bonded Bridges

This type of bridge or denture spans where one or more teeth have been lost. It is bonded or cemented into place. A bonded bridge will keep teeth from drifting into spaces created from a missing tooth and helps preserve normal functionality and bite for the jaw (TMJ) joint. It is usually anchored to the teeth on either sides of the space, which gives the bridge strong support. Brushing a bridge is no different than brushing natural teeth, but special flossing is required to keep the bridge and surrounding tissue healthy.

Custom Full or Partial Removable Dentures

Dr. Reese enjoys creating a deceptively natural and becoming smile that is unique to each of his many denture patients. Unlike many dentists or clinics that consider themselves ‘denture specialists’, Dr. Reese will personally create the smile and fit that is crucial to ensure the outcome is a success for the patient, and also meets his standard of care.

The benefit of removable dentures is that they can been taken out of your mouth for cleaning and are generally less expensive than the above options. However, both implants and partial bridges are likely to feel more stable and comfortable.

Don't forget - all dentures are not created equal. If you look for the lowest price, you’ll get what you pay for. Self-fitting dentures, which are sometimes offered for “discount” prices, will not fit as well, or be made with lasting materials, or personalized craftsmanship, and generally are harder to get use to the feel as they are bigger, and don’t work (chew!) as well as custom made dentures. Dr. Reese will make sure your dentures feature premium long-wearing, low-staining teeth and high impact acrylic denture base. He personally performs the critical alignment and positioning of your teeth to create the smile that is deceptively natural and beautiful.

No one has to know you’re wearing dentures. No one wants a denture that looks like a “denture.” Unlike old-fashioned dentures, which may look unnatural, today’s denture can be made just for you, allowing you to look and feel better without anyone knowing why. Dr. Reese has extensive experience and knowledge to select and arrange teeth in a manner that creates the warm, natural smile you seek. Dentures help you to lose that sunken look in your lower face, as well as the wrinkles around your mouth. You’ll likely look younger and smile more often.

REMEMBER, at Indianapolis Dentistry, we do it ALL in-office! Dr. Ted Reese utilizes holistic (whole-body) dentistry techniques in order to offer Indianapolis premier implant and denture treatment, in-house, at his dental surgery center just north of Greenwood, Indiana.
