Dentures vs. Dental Implants

July 24, 2012

A common question asked around our office is what is the difference between dentures and dental implants? Typically, when a patient is missing teeth, they purchase dentures simply due to the fact that they don't know they have another option. Dental implants work in the same fashion as dentures in that they replace missing teeth and gaps in the mouth. However, unlike dentures, which replace the entire set of teeth, implants individually replace one tooth at a time.

Typically for our more phobic patients, we would suggest dentures. This method does not require a surgery and in turn is cheaper than implants. However, unlike the dental implants the dentures are not firmly anchored into the gums and are notorious for moving around in the mouth; this can cause irritation and soreness.

Dental implants are the other solution we offer to replace broken or missing teeth. The digitally produced photo on the right depicts how implants work. This decision does require a surgery to place the implants in the gums and is more costly than dentures. However, implants are more reliable and do not require as  much care and thought as dentures typically do.
