About the Dental Implant Process

September 25, 2012

How long does it take to get a dental implant? Many patients ask us how long a dental implant process will take. While it varies by each patient, there are some time ranges you can keep in mind. While the actual implant placement typically takes less than one half hour, more time is needed if a ‘provisional’ crown must be custom made to replace the missing tooth, or if more implants or grafting is needed. For example, when a bone graft is needed, an additional 2 to 6 months may be necessary to allow the bone to heal completely before the implant can be placed. However, some dental implants can be placed without the need for incisions or sutures, which reduces any post surgical swelling or tenderness.

Dental implant procedures that can be done in one visit in our dental surgery center:

  • Removal of non-restorable tooth/teeth and the surgical placement of the implant(s) and ‘temporization’ of an acrylic tooth to eliminate temporary gaps in your smile
  • Same-day mini implant placement and denture retention to secure your existing dentures
  • In-office, intravenous (IV) sedation so you can safely sleep through your procedure

Dental implant procedures that add to the total length of the dental implant process:

  • Bone grafting to replace the missing jaw bone required for implant placement after years of tooth loss
  • Gum grafting to replace the shrunken gum tissue negatively affecting smile results in front tooth replacement
  • Sinus bone grafting to provide the required jaw bone for implant placement in the upper jaw
