Holistic Dental Cleanings by Dr. Reese

At the Indianapolis Center for Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Reese believes in a different type of relationships with our clients. With respect, knowledge, and understanding, we are your single office for all holistic dental needs:

Why Choose Indianapolis Holistic Dentistry?

  • Pure products - We scrutinize all of the products we use to make sure they are the very best. The polishing paste we use in our holistic cleanings is gluten free, fluoride free, and dye free. We want your body to be free of toxins and chemicals just like you do.
  • No fluoride and harsh rinses - Did you know fluoride rinses are typically dyed, sweetened with chemical sweeteners, and loaded with preservatives? We don't think that's the right way to provide care. We use a professional grade herbal tonic rinse that is preservative free and dye free to target the aggressive bacteria below the gum line that causes periodontal disease. It is also alcohol free to eliminate the harsh and harmful shock to your mouth that over the counter alcohol based rinses give.
  • Our methods designed with you in mind - We scrutinize all of the products we use to make sure they are the very best. The polishing paste we use in our holistic cleanings is gluten free, fluoride free, and dye free. We want your body to be free of toxins and chemicals just like you do.

Amalgam Fillings and Holistic Dentistry

There has been much debate on the safety of amalgam fillings. Currently, dental amalgam is considered to be a medical device, and is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FDA is responsible for ensuring that dental amalgam is reasonably safe and effective, and that, among other things, the product labeling seen by dentists has adequate directions for use and includes any appropriate warnings. (source) However, an increasing number of dentists have stopped using amalgam fillings on their patients after studies have shown how mercury vapor and particulate matter derived from amalgam fillings can cause severe problems in patients. Dr. Reese is a holistic dentist and an active member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). This organization advocates biological dentistry and achieving all the goals of modern dentistry while always choosing the safest, least toxic techniques, including safe replacement of mercury fillings.

Safe Removal of Amalgam Fillings

While the IAOMT is contesting the FDA classification deeming amalgams are safe, it is also advocating for the safety removal of amalgam fillings in dental patients. Removal of mercury “silver” amalgam fillings release mercury vapor and thousands of micron and submicron size pieces of mercury contaminated particulate matter. The IAOMT provides solutions to protect staff, patients and the environment from the hazards of dental mercury.

Amalgam removal creates mercury vapor and particulate matter

The mercury free dentists of the world have been acutely aware of the potential for excess exposure to mercury when removing amalgam fillings, and have devised a number of strategies for reducing the amount of mercury exposure to both patients and dental staff during amalgam removal.

Dr. Reese does Amalgam Fillings Removal

Dr. Ted Reese removes mercury amalgams in a safe manner, ensuring the least amount of mercury re-enters your body during the mercury removal process.

As a holistic dentist practicing in Indianapolis, Dr. Reese follows safety protocols developed by the International Academy of Mercury Safe Dentists and the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Dr. Reese and his staff at Indianapolis Dentistry do not use dental materials containing mercury and they exhaust all possible means to keep your teeth in its most natural state. We are proud to be offering a state-of-the-art dental office combined with the knowledge and concerns for your entire body health.

Holistic Dentist vs. Traditional Dentist

People often ask what is the difference between a holistic and a regular (or traditional, general) dentist.

Holistic vs. Traditional Dentist: Similarities

Holistic vs General DentistAll dentists, whether holistic or traditional, were trained in the same methods at the same dental schools. States require dentists to log a specific number of continuing education hours each year to maintain licensure. Those that embrace the holistic method of practice typically seek advanced training to enhance their knowledge of alternative dentistry techniques. Education, both for the practitioner and the patient, is an important aspect of holistic care.

Holistic vs. Traditional Dentist: Differences

The true difference between holistic and traditional dentistry is the approach of dentists in treating their patients. A traditional dentist treats symptoms in teeth and gums when they become problems. They also attempt to prevent such problems from reoccurring. Holistic dentists do the practice of treating the underlying problems that cause symptoms in the mouth. They also attempt to eliminate those problems by preventing the adverse effect on your overall health.

Not all dentists give much importance to the overall health of an individual while they are performing the treatment. They are not trained in the long-term effects of what dentistry does to the whole body. Continuing education and research led to the birth of holistic dentistry. Studies conclude a link between gum diseases and other health related issues such as heart disease.

Areas of Differences between Holistic and Traditional Dentistry

Here are some areas where a holistic dentist performs differently from a traditional dentist:

  • Amalgam Fillings - Holistic dentists understand that mercury is toxic and meet or exceed safety guidelines for mercury amalgam removal.
  • Fluoride - Holistic dentists are against the use of fluoride in topical and ingested form. They may also argue against fluoridating water.
  • Root Canals (or Root Canal Therapy) - Holistic dentists use ozone therapy to sterilize the root canal of bacteria or offer root canal alternatives.
  • Biocompatibility of Dental Materials - Holistic dentists believe that what goes into your mouth can affect your entire body and many check the biocompatibility of the materials that they use. Most holistic dentists use a variety of different composite filling materials as well as different materials for other procedures (bridges, crowns, etc.).

How To Choose Between a Holistic Dentist vs. a Traditional Dentist

Any general dentist can call himself a holistic dentist but not all who claim to be holistic dentists are truly holistic. They call themselves holistic dentists as they don't place any mercury fillings but being a holistic dentist is more than that.

When choosing between a holistic and traditional dentist, the best thing you can do is ask the dentist what he will do in typical treatment situations, such as “How do you determine which type of filling is right for me?” Or “Do I have other options other than getting a root canal?”

If you want to find out a real holistic dentist, their answers will revolve around your entire body. The holistic dentist will discuss about the role of oral health in your overall health.
