The Health Benefits of Removing Amalgam Fillings

As a dentist who practices biocompatible dentistry, Dr. Reese only uses materials that are simulate the natural tooth structure as closely as possible.  As a holistic dentist, he ensures that dental procedures are done safely without long-term harmful effects on himself and his patient as well as the dental staff who might be assisting on procedures. This means he has chosen not to use fluoride and to use porcelain or composite fillings instead of traditional amalgams. He also actively promotes the health benefits of removing mercury amalgam fillings, offering a very safe procedure in our Indianapolis dentist office. What You Should Know About Mercury Amalgam Fillings

Dr. Reese is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) whose goal is, “to always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the mission of treatment.” An IAOMT dentist is knowledgeable in modern techniques of proper mercury removal, stays current with the latest research, and works in conjunction with physicians knowledgeable in testing for and detoxifying mercury. While the body has systems to naturally prevent mercury from being absorbed into the body, why take this risk through long term exposure?

This is not a recent change. Dr. Reese stopped using and offering amalgam fillings twenty years ago.

Most of us have likely heard about the risks and perils of playing with mercury from thermometers or elsewhere as curious kids. Despite those warnings and admonitions, the use of mercury as a low cost, predictable alternative to gold restorations found its way into dentistry. The ongoing belief is that the amalgamation of mercury with silver metals somehow renders it inert and safe for intraoral use as dental fillings, but the IAOMT has a fact sheet on the toxic effects of mercury in dental amalgam fillings on the environment and human health.

The Health Benefits of Removing Amalgam Fillings

When Indianapolis Dentistry removes mercury amalgam fillings, they take as much care as possible to prevent exposure of heavy metals to your body. In addition to the physical barriers as put forth by the IAOMT, International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology we are providing some simple physiologic safeguards and also recommend some home care efforts for you consideration.

Physical barriers and safeguards:

  1. There is a physical barrier in the form of a latex-free rubber dam to isolate your teeth and lessen mercury exposure once it is removed from the tooth and exposed to the body via oral mucuso or airway.
  2. We have cold water coolant spray while the fillings are removed out in sections, hi powered HEPA filter air suctioning, oxygen for you to breathe while vapors are potentially created, and safety goggles to cover your eyes.
  3. There is also supplemental high dose vitamin C administration for free radical scavenging (antioxidant support) delivered via IV.

In addition we provide the following physiologic supplements to assist your body in any necessary detoxification process:

  1. The water bottle we supply after performing a removal has a product called Detox ND from Premier Labs. This chlorella is to help in ‘chelating’ or binding any heavy metals so your body can more readily eliminate them (similar to chelation therapy).
  2. You will also be supplied with four capsules of Mediclay FX. These capsules function much like activated charcoal has been used in the past. Take one of these when you arrive for the procedure, and then one a day for the following three days. This is an intestinal adsorptive and absorptive agent to assist in the detoxification process. Make sure to check out our blog, “Self-Care Tips for Heavy Metal Toxicity,” for further at-home care.
