Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. It commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth called plaque. The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene that encourages plaque to form. Plaque is an invisible, sticky film composed mainly of bacteria.
Gingivitis usually precedes periodontitis (gum disease). However, it is important to know that not all gingivitis progresses to periodontitis.
If gum inflammation does turn into gum disease then periodontal treatments may be necessary to treat the underlying disease in the gums.
How do you know if you have reversible gingivitis or if you have already progressed into periodontitis? You must see a dental professional for an accurate diagnosis. Below are some common signs.
Common Signs of Gingivitis
- Inflammation of the gums
- Red or swollen gums
- Gums that bleed easily
